Back in India and in the wilderness

  • How is India treating People of Indian Origin who make efforts to revive contacts and start
    something back home?
Coming back to the country and trying to do something good has not been easy for persons like Rashmi Dickinson – there are many like her – who made Amber, the former capital of the erstwhile Jaipur rulers, her home for the past 13 years.
  • Dr. Dickinson's case is fairly well known in the Rajasthan capital – that though not from Rajasthan, she developed a strong liking for the enchanting mountainous terrain of Amber in the suburbs of Jaipur and purchased land there to set up the Amber Trust to help locals in heritage conservation and health and to educate young children.
    • At one time there were 67 cases filed against her in various courts, all the money that she earned in England was spent here.
    • Yet she concedes that she too made mistakes in not knowing the local laws.
    • She had to pay a heavy price for not knowing Hindi as well.
  • “In England by now the departments concerned for the harassment would have apologized to me and would have paid me compensation for all that I underwent. Here they want me to be grateful if a case is not filed against me for land grabbing,” she observes.
  • There should be a single window giving guidance on purchase of land, water -power connections and NOCs from various departments in the case of enterprises, she suggested.
  • “Everybody makes mistakes and I too had my share but there should be avenues available in the system to rectify them—perhaps penalties can be levied if necessary, for regularization and settlement of records,” she suggests.
Sharing is Caring :
