The woman who captured history on camera

  • Homai Vyarawala, considered the country's first woman photo-journalist, died here on Sunday
  • She was awarded Padma Vibhushan during the Republic day felicitations last year in recognition of her contribution as a photo-journalist.
  • Among her more known contributions as a photo-journalist was the first Flag hoisting at the Red Fort on August 15, 1947, departure from the country of the last Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, and funerals of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Globalisation doing what politicians couldn't in Nagaland: book

  • Know a State capital in India which does not have a single cinema? Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, takes the credit. It has just a few libraries.
    • Widespread ignorance and indifference has almost shut out the strategically crucial border regions of India from the mainstream with telling and often tragic consequences, says a new book Scrolls of Strife, The endless history of the Nagas.
  • The result is Nagaland is educationally a backward State and career prospects are stunted.
  • Kohima at one time indeed had a theatre which was bombed out, it says.
  • Globalisation, however, seems to be doing what decades of inept political handling could not.
  • Many Nagas now are world citizens, travelling quite freely and winning for themselves meaningful participation in different spheres of life despite occasional prejudice and abuse.

Police, ED can take RBI help to choke terror funding

  • Intensifying its drive to curb terror funding, the Union government has asked the Jammu and Kashmir Police as well as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to seek help from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in monitoring transfer of funds meant for separatist groups for alleged anti-national activities, including disturbing peace in the State.
  • It was decided that the police as well as the ED would seek help of RBI which monitors the gateways of credit cards and money transfer agents
