‘Lok Adalats are safety valves to remove pressure from courts'

  • Alternative Disputes Resolution (ADR) methods will act as a “safety value” to remove pressure from courts in disposing of pending cases and resolving disputes
    • Arrears of litigation are like pressure cookers. If there is no safety valve, they are bound to burst.
    • Lok adalats provide a better solution for the disputes through reconciliation process
  • Justice Kabir said it was natural that litigation too rise with the population but at the same time the county needed to look at the system for effective management of litigation.
  • Some time ago, the Madhya Pradesh High Court achieved a record of disposing of about three lakh cases in a single sitting of Lok Adalat. Later, it broke its own record twice by disposing of about 6 lakh and 13 lakh pending cases respectively in the subsequent two mega Lok Adalats
  • Besides disposing of pending cases related to Section 138 of Negotiable Instruments Act, Motor Vehicles Act, compoundable criminal cases, the it was also engaged in resolving various civic issues of in the State like solid waste disposal, lake rejuvenation, among others.

HC strikes a blow for transgenders

  • In a historic move aimed at removing gender discrimination, the Karnataka High Court took on board a 27-year-old transgender in the Group D category.
    • The appointment assumes significance both socially and legally, besides setting an example to the State Government, which is yet to make up its mind about employing transgenders in government services.
  • The Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA), functioning under the High Court, has been involved in various activities to bring transgenders into the mainstream.
    • There is no legal bar in the country to appoint transgenders to government posts and constitutional offices.

Lost 18th century Sanskrit grammar manuscript by Jesuit missionary found in Italy

  • A Sanskrit grammar manuscript of grammarian, lexicographer and philologist Arnos Padre, which had been lost for over two centuries, was found in an Italian monastery recently.
  • The manuscript, Grammatica Grandonica , written by the Jesuit missionary Fr. Johann Ernst Hanxleden, popularly known as Arnos Padre, three centuries ago, is considered as one of the earliest missionary grammars in Sanskrit.
    • Arnos Padre has been remembered for his efforts to integrate the culture of the East with the West. He tried to assimilate the essence of Indian culture and literature with that of the West.
    • Proficient in German, Sanskrit, Malayalam, Latin, Syriac, Portuguese and Tamil, the Padre compiled Malayalam-Portuguese and Sanskrit-Portuguese dictionaries.
