Another blow for freedom

  • the court held that the government had no power to suspend screening of a film that had been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification
  • The CBFC, or censor board, is an empowered regulatory body constituted to view, rate, and censor objectionable portions of a film prior to its release.
  • To seek to ban or suspend the screening of a film certified by the censor board under the procedure established by law (in this case, the Cinematograph Act 1952) goes against the fundamental right of freedom of speech and expression guaranteed by the Constitution — and is a threat to democratic dissent and artistic creativity.

NHRC notice to Karnataka on manual scavenging

  •  The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to Karnataka on media reports that around 8,000 people still make a living through the banned practice of manual scavenging in the State

J&K Human Rights Commission's SIT confirms 2,156 unidentified bodies in ‘mass graves'

  • The Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has created ripples by revealing that 2,156 unidentified bodies are lying in “mass graves” in three districts of north Kashmir.
  • In its 17-page report, the special investigation team (SIT) of the SHRC headed by a Senior Superintendent of Police has taken the lid off some shocking facts, revealing that 2,730 unidentified bodies had been buried in 38 sites in north Kashmir's Baramulla, Bandipore and Kupwara districts.
  • These were claimed to be the bodies of unidentified militants by the police and handed over to local people for burial
  • Association of Parents of Displaced Persons (APDP) had in its reports maintained that 2,373 were buried in these mass graves
