Bio-medical waste plant still runs in Sukhdev Vihar
- The plant is barely 30 metres from a residential area and thus violates a basic CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) norm for setting up a biomedical waste facility.
- The plant being operated by Synergy Waste Management Pvt Ltd should have been located reasonably far from residential and sensitive area
'Angioplasty can prevent renal failure'
- Angioplasty now restores blood supply to the brain, arms, kidney, intestines, lungs and legs, besides for the heart.
- Blocks in the arteries to the kidney can give rise to uncontrolled high blood pressure and kidney failure.
- Renal artery stenosis interferes with the blood supply to the kidney resulting in retention of salt and water in the body leading to uncontrolled high blood pressure.
- Chronic lack of blood supply also leads to kidney damage (renal failure).
- Renal failure can be prevented by angioplasty to the kidney in 20% of the patients. Also the frequency of dialysis and renal transplant can be obviated
- Angioplasty is a non-surgical treatment for blocked arteries which restores blood supply to the concerned parts of the body which lack blood supply due to the blocks.
Robots can conduct surgery: Doctor
- "Robots can substitute surgeons, eliminating possible human error during surgeries," said Dr HO Khek Yu, a professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Cluster Medicine in Singapore.
- Dr Khek revealed that three endoscopic surgeries held in Andhra Pradesh last June were successful.
- A case which may have taken three hours at the hands of humans was done by robots in three minutes. The time for recovery was less.
- However, we need to do more research to find out if this can be replicated in other circumstances by other robots controlled by doctors who may not be competent in robotics
BrahMos hypersonic missile in five years: Sivathanu Pillai
- The BrahMos Aero Space Limited is on the job of making the hypersonic missile BrahMos that could travel at a speed of Mach 7 and is likely to be ready in five years.The present supersonic missiles travel at a speed of Mach 2.8 to 3
- With regard to use of nanotechnology for devising health care gadgets for personnel who fought wars and those guarding borders at higher altitudes, he said that a separate group of scientists in the DRDO was on the job.Some of the gadgets using nanotechnology were under clinical trial.
- On the DRDO's tie-ups with educational institutions, he said Centres of Excellence in Material Sciences, Life Sciences and Chemical Sciences were being established in institutions.The DRDO had entrusted nearly 3,000 projects with 300 institutions across the country.
