- · The Comptroller and Auditor General of India has pulled up the Income Tax Department for not recovering tax arrears worth over 4,500 crore rupees from various entities in the past one year. The CAG has recommended that the Finance Ministry should work out appropriate modalities for improving the liaison between the two wings of the income tax department to ensure speedy disposal of cases.
- · Close to 17,000 Delhiites have been caught for drunken driving since January, making in the history of Delhi Police. Driving licenses have been suspended in 2,200 cases, 2,869 were sent to prison and more than 5,000 cases are still under trial.
- · NATO has ended its training mission in Iraq which was aimed at assisting in the development of Iraqi security forces training structures and institutions. It was comprised of 120 soldiers from 12 countries. All of them will leave by year end. The US forces ended combat missions in Iraq last year and have already handed over much of their security role.
- · Tunisians paid their respects to Mohammad Bouzid, the young rebel from Sidi Bouzid whose sacrifice heralded the Arab Spring in the region. His suffering galvanized the youth in Tunisia, grappling with rising unemployment, poverty, corruption and restrictions under the autocratic regime of Ben Ali. The local unrest fanned out across the country as the unplugged social media networks uploaded the videos and the messages of protest and the reactions online. The events in the birthplace of Arab Spring has since, inspired the people in Egypt, Libya and Yemen who showed the door to autocratic rulers.
- · In the Philippines, the death toll in the devastating flash floods and tropical storm “Washi” has gone up to 500 and leaving a deadly trail of flattened homes, broken bridges and smashed vehicles.
