India inks revised tax treaty with Australia

  • India and Australia has inked a protocol, amending the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) of 1991 to enable effective mutual exchange of information on tax matters for tracking black money and tax evasion.

440 killed in Philippines storm

  • Tropical storm Washi whipped the southern Philippines, unleashing mammoth floods across vast areas that left 440 people dead and nearly 200 missing
  • They were warned [about the approaching storm], but they did not go into pre-emptive evacuation.
  • Mindanao was rarely visited by storms, though about 20 major storms strike the Philippines annually, with most hitting Luzon, the largest and most populous island in the Southeast Asian archipelago.

Overseas spouses must learn English, rules British court

  • Hundreds of foreigners from non-English speaking countries, mostly from the Indian subcontinent, find themselves effectively barred from joining their spouses or partners in Britain following a court ruling that upheld a government rule that foreign nationals must learn English before they are allowed to come and live with their British spouses.
  • it was discriminatory and interfered with their rights to a family life guaranteed under the European Convention on Human Rights
  • “The new rule impacts on the Article-8 rights of the claimants, [the right to a family life] but its aims, to promote integration and to protect public services, are legitimate aims,” the judgment said.
