India's ‘oldest man' passes away at 125

  • Parasram Gurjar, believed to be the oldest man in the country, passed away on Sunday at the age of 125 in his native village in Madhya Pradesh
  • Three sons and a daughter predeceased him.

It tells stories of its metamorphosis

  • Delhi, the seat of several empires, rulers and administrators, is a cornucopia of stories; some tightly bound with facts and figures, others a blend of the mystic and the imaginative.
  • As Delhi the historic city completes 100 years of being the capital of a vast and varied country, it tells stories of its metamorphosis — from a surreal Indraprastha, the opulent capital of the Pandavas, to the modern-day cosmopolitan metro that is a power centre, a cultural hub, home to the rich and mighty, and also one with a dark underbelly.
  • At the Delhi Durbar in the Coronation Park on December 12, 1911, King George V declared Delhi as the national capital and with that the seat of government was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi.
  • The foundation stone was laid the same day at Kingsway, which is now known as Rajpath. The new capital was designed by British architect Edwin Lutyens to house the government buildings.
  • New Delhi was officially declared the seat of the Government of India after Independence in 1947.
