Use might to push peace, Chinese media tells U.S.
- China's official said it welcomed a bigger U.S. presence in Asia, but only if it helped promote peace,after President Barack Obama unveiled a new military strategy.
- The plan calls for the U.S. military to strengthen its presence in Asia and prepare for possible challenges from countries such as China, while downplaying future huge counter-insurgency campaigns such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan.
- The People's Liberation Army is the world's largest active military, and is extremely secretive about its defence programmes, which benefit from a huge and expanding military budget.
- “The U.S. must realise that it cannot stop the rise of China and that being friendly to China is in its utmost interests,” it said
S.K. Singh award for nuclear trouble-shooter Venkatesh Varma
- Senior Indian diplomat D. Bala Venkatesh Varma — a key member of the negotiating team that saw the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal through from the first agreement of July 2005 down to the Additional Protocol in 2010 — was given the first S.K. Singh award “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen India's position in the global nuclear order”
- The award for excellence in the Indian Foreign Service is named after the former foreign secretary and Governor, Shailendra Kumar Singh, a diplomat widely respected within the IFS community for his acumen, professionalism and leadership.
