  • ·         In Madhya Pradesh, a two-day meeting of the empowered committee of states' Finance Ministers began in Bhopal to discuss issues related to the common interests of the states. The committee will especially discuss the proposed imposition of service tax on the basis of negative lists of services. Finance, commercial tax and statistics ministers of about 10 states are attending the meeting.
  • ·         National Commission for Protection of Child Right, has asked the state governments to propose a system called Shiksha Samvad for holding regular dialogues between government officials and civil society on the implementation of the Right to Education Act. This will enable the local administration to keep a close watch on how the implementation of the Act is proceeding at the ground level and allows the people to seek speedy redressal by raising the issues directly with the government officials.
  • ·         According to a Study which has been conducted by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for the period 1995 to 2010, it was found that the employees working in nuclear power stations in the close proximity of radiation are not prone to any higher rate of occurrence of disease, particularly ‘cancer’, than the general public. The study covered health profile of its employees at nuclear power stations for over 15 years.
  • ·         To commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, the Ministry of Culture, under the guidance of National Implementation Committee, chaired by Finance Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee, has undertaken several projects, schemes and events. One of the projects is compilation of a Web-bibliography of works of, and by, Tagore. Apart from works by Tagore, literary criticism and other works on Tagore published in India or abroad have been included in the bibliography. The bibliography is launched on the web by the Finance Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee today.
  • ·         Latest study by the PHD Chamber of Commerce revealed that the country's Gross Domestic Product is expected to touch 2.5 trillion USD by 2021 from the current of around 1 trillion USD. The per capita income is also expected to double from the present level of 900 USD to 1800 USD by 2021.
  • ·         Government said that widening the road network and better education to people about road safety are some other important measures apart from standardizing licensing procedure to reduce the number of fatelities in the accidents. India has the highest rate of road accidents across the world.
  • ·         The French President Nicholas Sarkozy is meeting the German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin for talks on the Euro zone debt crisis. On the agenda today is the tax of a new euro zone treaty to enforce greater budgetary discipline for those countries using the single currency. Tax on financial transactions will also come up for discussions between the two leaders.
