- · Three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case are to be hanged on September 9th. After twenty years of the assassination and 11 years after the submission of the petitions,t he three convicts Santhan, Murugan and Perarivalan have been officially informed yesterday that their mercy petition to the President of India has been rejected.
- · The Home Minister, P. Chidambaram today laid the foundation stone of an Integrated Check Post at Petrapole border along Bangladesh at North 24 Pargana district in West Bengal. 13 Integrated Check Posts in the country out of which seven will be along Indo-Bangladesh border. Itrovide facilities like immigration, customs, quarantine and smooth cross-border movement of persons, goods and transport under one umbrella.
- · The US President Barack Obama today declared emergency in three States of New York, Virginia and Massachusetts as hurricane Irene(wind speed of 100 miles per hour) is likely to hit the eastern shores of the United States.
- · In Indonesia, ten people are feared dead and several others missing after a ferry sank off in the Sulawesi island.
- · In Uttarakhand, yatra to the Himalayan shrines of Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath has been suspended today as landslides continue to block the national highways leading to these places.
- · The Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police has cracked a network of pumping fake currency into the Kashmir valley.
- · The Bihar government is today distributing Indira Awas among over seven lakh thirty seven thousand BPL beneficiaries of the state. Each beneficiary is allotted Rupees thirty thousand through bank passbook as first instalment and after fulfilling the set criteria, the second installment of rupees fifeteen thousand will be released. In Maoist hit seven districts of the state, 48,500 rupees will be given to each beneficiary.
- · In Gujarat, three day Bharat Nirman Abhiyan was launched today. The programmes on Right to Information , National Rural Health Mission and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act are to be planed.
