Myanmar MPs propose amnesty
- Members of Myanmar's Army-dominated Parliament have called for a sweeping jail amnesty, state media reported on Saturday, after a U.N. envoy called for the release of prisoners of conscience.
- The plight of around 2,000 political prisoners, many of whom are serving double-digit jail terms, is a key concern of the international community, along with other human rights abuses and democratic reforms.
Humanitarian situation new battle for Libyan rebels
- Libyan rebels were facing a new battle on Saturday, struggling to provide Tripoli's residents with water, electricity, petrol and food, amid power outages and with much of the capital's water cut.
- Many districts have no water, and others only have undrinkable ground water.
- A litre of petrol that used to cost 0.15 dinars (12 U.S. cents) now costs around three dinars ($2.47).
- “Tripoli was under the tight control of the dictatorship for 42 years. We are starting from point zero in this situation. Do not ask for miracles, but we promise to try to make this difficult period as short as we can,” Mr. Shammam told.
